Rubén Camilo Lois González is a Senior Professor of Geography at the University of Santiago de Compostela, within the Department of Geography, where he conducts research and teaches at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He specializes in urban and cultural geography, tourism analysis in historic cities, cultural itineraries, and pilgrimage routes.
He is Vice President of the International Geographical Union (IGU/UGI), a Member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Association of Geography (AGE), responsible for International and Institutional Relations, and an International Corresponding Academician of the National Academy of Geography of the Argentine Republic. He is also Head of the University Institute for Studies and Development of Galicia (IDEGA) and Coordinator of the Competitive Reference Group ANTE (Territorial Analysis) at the University of Santiago de Compostela.
He served as Secretary (1991–1995) and later as Head (1995–1999 and 2017–2024) of the Department of Geography at USC. From 2003 to 2005, he was Dean of the Faculty of Geography and History at the same university, before being appointed Director General for Tourism of the Autonomous Government of Galicia (2005–2009). In addition, he was Director of the Euro-regional Study Centre (CEER), an organization for scientific cooperation between universities in Galicia and northern Portugal (2013–2017).
He has supervised 42 doctoral theses, some in co-supervision with the Universities of Barcelona, Porto, Paris I–La Sorbonne, and Politecnico di Milano. He has participated in numerous regional, national, and European research projects. He has authored over 200 books and book chapters (published by Springer, Ashgate, Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan, L’Harmattan, Cátedra, among others), and more than 150 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Tourism Geographies, Mobilities, Sociologia Ruralis, European Planning Studies, Territory, Politics and Governance, Gender, Place and Culture, etc. Tourism Geographies, Mobilities, Sociologia Ruralis, European Planning Studies, Territory, Politics and Governance, Gender, Place and Culture, entre otras.
He serves as a consultant and evaluator for research bodies of the Spanish, French, Italian, and Romanian governments. His international career is extensive, having been a guest lecturer at universities in France (Le Mans, Caen, Toulouse-Le Mirail), Norway (Bergen, Finnmark University College), Canada (Calgary, Lethbridge), Brazil (Universidade Federal da Bahia), and Italy (Università degli Studi di Messina).
